A single S-Curve may be created graphically and displayed by Microsoft Project by:

– Displaying the Resource Sheet in the top pane and selecting all the resources,

– The Resource Graph in the bottom pane,

– Right-clicking and displaying the Cumulative Costs, and

– Right-clicking, opening the Bar Styles… form and formatting as shown below:

When more than one S-Curve is required then it is suggested that the data should be exported to Excel using the Analyze Timescale Data in Excel… function from the Analysis toolbar and graphed there or a product like DecisionEdge used.

Displaying Cumulative Histogram in Microsoft Project Software

This may be achieved in a similar way as an S-Curve by:

– Selecting Cumulative Work

– Selecting the Bar option in the Bar Styles… form under Total allocated work for Selected resources

Activity Information in Bottom Layout – Primavera P6 Version 8.2

The Bottom Layout in P6 has a number of tabs where information about the highlighted activity may be viewed and edited.

  • General
This form displays the:

  • Activity ID and Activity Description.
  • Project and Responsible Manager, these may not be edited here.

It also displays activity attributes including some which were set as defaults in the Project Window:

  • Activity Type, Duration Type, % Complete Type, Activity Calendar, WBS, and Primary Resource.
  • Status
This is where the following data is displayed/edited:

  • The Durations,
  • The Status, where Actual Dates and % Complete may be entered,
  • Where Constraints are entered, and
  • By selecting from the drop down box the Labor and Nonlabor Units or Costs and Material Costs may be displayed.

NOTE: It is possible to assign resource Units in the Status tab without a resource being assigned to the activity and the rate will be taken from the Project Properties Calculations tab.

  • Summary
This form displays summary information about the activity. It has three buttons that select which data will be displayed:

  • Units or Costs or Dates.
  • Resources
Resources and Roles may be assigned to activities and assignment information displayed.
  • Expenses
Expenses may be added and edited here. These are intended for one-off costs that do not require a resource to be created.

NOTE: These are often used for material costs on construction and maintenance projects to prevent clogging up the Resource Window.

  • Notebook
Notes about activities may be made here by adding a Notebook Topic and then adding notes about the topic.
  • Steps
This function enables an activity to be broken down into increments titled Steps that may be marked as complete as work on the Activity progresses.
  • Feedback
This is where comments made in the timesheet module may be viewed.
  • WPs & Docs
This is where files that have been listed in the Work Products and Documents Window may be associated with activities and then opened from this form.
  • Codes
Project Codes may be created and activities associated with these codes with this form. These codes are similar to P3 and SureTrak Activity Codes and activities may be organized in a similar way.
  • Relationships,

Predecessors &

Successors

This is where the activity’s predecessors and successors are added, edited, and deleted. This is covered in the Adding the Dependencies chapter.

In Microsoft Project, the Round bars to whole days is used to make it easier to see short duration bars on a long duration schedule:

– When this option is unchecked, the length of the task will be shown in proportion to the total number of hours worked per day over the 24-hour time span.

For example, an 8-hour working duration bar is shown below:

– When this option is checked, the task bar is often displayed and spanned over the whole day irrespective of calendar working time:

Bar Text

Text may be placed on all bars using the Format, Bar… form or selected bars using the Format, Bar Styles… form.

Note: The length of the Bar Chart may be reduced by placing the text on top of the bar instead of the end:

Format Gantt Chart Bar Colors

Colors are formatted in a number of forms and there is no single form for formatting all colors:

  • Nonworking time colors in the Gantt Chart are formatted in the Timescale form; double-click on the timescale.
  • Text colors are formatted in the Text Styles and Font forms, found under the Format command.
  • Gridline colors are formatted in the Gridlines form, also found under the Format command.
  • Hyperlink colors are formatted under Tools, Options…, Edit tab.
  • Timescale and Column Header colors are formatted with the system color scheme used in the Desktop, Start, Control Panel, Display option.

The Logic Lines, also known as Dependencies, Relationships, or Links, inherit their color from the predecessor’s bar color in the Gantt Chart view and may be formatted in the Network Diagram view by selecting Format, Layout….
